How to buy a house - Our story

-->

After graduating college my boyfriend and I took the glamorous route and moved back in with our parents. We’ve been able to save money, pay off debt, and raid the refrigerator at our leisure; in short it’s been pretty awesome.  Also, it’s worth noting that we’re not married and we have never officially lived together. During college while we’d spend the night frequently, we also had our own home. A few months back we housesat for two months. It was our first taste of living together. We liked it.

It’s always been our intention and goal to buy a house. When we would tell people where we lived with our parents we would quickly add that it is only because we intend to buy a house soon. Also there was that whole not having a well paying job thing. I continued to take low paying internships for close to a year after graduating. A local university eventually hired me; it was a place I felt comfortable putting down roots and had a paycheck capable of paying real bills. We both paid off our credit cards and started building our savings. Mine grew slower than his simply because I was obsessed with debt reduction making huge payments to my student loans. While debt is never a good thing we also knew that the game of life is also about making smart investments. Right now our credit and savings are feeling good we feel ready (or as ready as anyone will ever be) to become responsible, independent adults (gulp). And for us that means buying a home.
